Seeking an Associate Scientist with experience in routine Plant Pathology testing from scheduling to reporting. The role requires individual with background in pathology and/or molecular biology and ability to work autonomously. Demonstrate ability to understand and interpret data from diverse assays including DAS-ELISA, liquid plating, seed extract PCR, and virus tissue screening with PCR. Data interpretation includes colorimetric assays, culture morphology, OD values, cutoffs, background vs. signal, gel band analysis, identifying problematic qPCR curves, sequence analysis, and general comparative data across different assays or historical testing perspectives. We maintain high quality results by including process improvement and following Best Laboratory Practices in our standard processes. Additionally, we comply with USDA APHIS PPQ 526 permits and NSHS accredited laboratory assays. Communication is key for working in our shared laboratory spaces and with our global stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities

1. Preparation and analysis of plant samples to detect the presence of plant pathogens using molecular biology techniques and microbiology assays, for virus/viroid (90%) and bacteria/fungal (10%) detection.

2. Independently schedule and perform laboratory work (nucleic acid extraction – magnetic and column based chemistries), PCR assays (traditional and qPCR), ELISA, liquid plating, gel and sequence analysis, and report results within lab and to stakeholders. Including updating sample status and accurate results in real time.

3. Use databases, software, and specialized equipment for obtaining and recording data. Responsible for daily/weekly/monthly maintenance on equipment and may require troubleshooting or communicating required repairs.

4. Preparing stocks (rehydration, working stocks, glycerol stocks) for any of our primers, probes, cultures, and controls. Updating records required for tracking stock performance or inventory.

5. Assisting laboratory with routine inventory, housekeeping, and chemical handling and waste processes.

6. Participation and feedback with Plant Pathology projects, farm or breeder support, and other business goals. Research may include work in laboratory, greenhouse, field collections or scouting, and walk in chambers.

Requirements:

  1. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize tasks
  2. Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and written, in a multi-cultural setting.
  3. Accurately and independently perform established plant pathogen detection methods and protocols after appropriate training. Maintain records of training and proficiency on Training Matrix.
  4. Highly self-motivated, with a strong interest in working with and becoming knowledgeable about plants and plant pathogens (especially viruses) is necessary.
  5. Proven reliability and ability to work efficiently.
  6. Willingness to perform routine tasks with a high level of detail and mental concentration.
  7. Must be able work independently but also cooperatively in a team setting.
  8. Proficient and accurate computer skills (MS Word and Excel) for reporting and database entry.
  9. Good manual dexterity with the ability to perform repetitive motion.
  10. Daily lab upkeep including proper care and use of laboratory equipment.
  11. Aptitude to troubleshoot and learn new techniques.
  12. Makes sound decisions, even in the absence of complete information.
  13. Follows through on commitments and makes sure others do the same.
  14. Provides direction, delegation, and removes obstacles to get work done.

Required Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree with 2 years laboratory experience or Master’s degree or higher in biology, molecular biology, biotechnology or related field of study plus a minimum of 2 years laboratory experience through coursework and/or job experience is required.
  2. Demonstrated laboratory experience using molecular biology methods (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR/rtPCR) is required.
  3. Experience working in a clinical laboratory is not necessary, but desirable. Understanding of Good Laboratory Practices is favorable.
