Job Description

Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic Chief Risk Officer (CRO) to join the executive team of our mortgage operations business. The CRO will be responsible for leading and managing all aspects of risk management across the Mortgage Originations organization, including counterparty risk, repurchase demands, quality assurance and credit policy functions. This also includes identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks to ensure the company's financial stability, compliance, and operational efficiency. This role requires a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of the mortgage industry and a strong ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities:
  • Risk Management
    • Develop and implement comprehensive risk management strategies to identify, assess and mitigate risks associated with mortgage loan origination.
    • Establish risk appetite and tolerance levels in alignment with the company's strategic objectives.
    • Oversee the management of counterparty risk, ensuring the financial stability and reliability of all counterparties.
    • Lead efforts to address and resolve repurchase demands and manage the repurchase process efficiently and effectively.
    • Identify, assess, and prioritize potential risks across all business units, including credit, operational, market, liquidity, regulatory, and reputational risks.
    • Conduct regular risk assessments and stress testing to evaluate the impact of various scenarios on the business.
    • Monitor external and internal risk factors, including changes in regulatory requirements, economic conditions, and industry trends.
    • Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies and action plans to address identified risks.
    • Oversee the design and implementation of effective internal controls, policies, and procedures.
    • Stay updated on regulatory changes and industry developments, ensuring the company's risk management practices remain current and effective.
    • Establish and maintain robust risk monitoring and reporting systems.
  • Quality Assurance
    • Establish and maintain a robust quality assurance framework to ensure the highest standards of loan quality and compliance.
    • Conduct regular audits and reviews to identify areas of improvement and implement corrective actions as necessary.
    • Collaborate with the operations team to enhance loan quality and minimize defects.
  • Credit Policy
    • Develop and maintain credit policies and guidelines that align with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
    • Monitor and analyze credit performance, making recommendations for policy adjustments as needed.
    • Ensure that credit policies are consistently applied across all channels and that exceptions are managed appropriately.
  • Leadership and Collaboration
    • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the risk management, quality assurance, repurchase and credit policy teams.
    • Collaborate with executive leadership to align risk management strategies with the companys overall business objectives.
    • Foster a culture of risk awareness and continuous improvement across the organization.
    • Collaborate with the Chief Compliance Officer to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, standards and best practices.
    • Collaborate with other departments, including finance, legal, compliance, and operations, to ensure a coordinated approach to risk management.
    • Provide regular reports to the executive team on risk exposures, mitigation efforts, and emerging risks.
    • Ensure timely and accurate risk-related information is communicated to stakeholders.
    • Lead and mentor the risk management team, fostering a culture of risk awareness and accountability.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in finance, business administration, or a related field (Advanced degree preferred).
  • Minimum 7 years of extensive experience in risk management within the mortgage or financial services industry.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing effective risk management strategies and managing counterparty risk, repurchase demands, quality assurance and credit policy functions
  • Strong knowledge of mortgage lending requirements, regulatory requirements and industry best practices and trends.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • High level of integrity and ethical standards.
  • Moderate travel will be required.
