Job Description

Position Purpose:
The Housing Navigator is responsible for identifying secure, safe, and stable housing options for program participants at the Kennedy and Sterling. This position is required to actively seek out, obtain and maintain relationships with private and corporate landlords within the District of Columbia.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Engages and build relationships with case managers, program participants, property managers, corporate and private landlords.
  • Conducts comprehensive housing assessments, housing planning and client-driven housing searches based on the housing stability exit plans and the client’s needs.
  • Assists families with completing housing applications and advocating for clients with landlords if necessary.
  • Conducts and schedules weekly van tours for clients to view properties throughout the District of Columbia.
  • Provides case managers with at least eight housing leads by the end of each week. The number of expected leads may vary depending on the census. The Program Director will determine how many leads are expected each week.
  • Communicates in a professional fashion with the Program Director and case management team regarding all housing related matters. 
  • Develop new relationships with new landlords/property management companies per week (In-Person and Virtually).
  • May assist families in obtaining vital information, i.e. Social Security card, INS documentation, and identification cards, and drivers licenses needed for housing applications.
  • Attends weekly case conferences with DHS.
  • Conducts special workshops and presentations regarding housing resources in DC. Workshops will include but are not limited to housing fairs, rapid rehousing informational session, financial literacy, being a good tenant, etc.
  • Develops and maintains an internal housing database of housing community partners.
  • Collaborates with other Family Services DC housing coordinators to supply viable housing leads.
  • Meets with case management team weekly to assess the client’s needs.
  • Enters housing documentation into HMIS and Step Tool.
Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Transports clients to appointments using company vehicle.
  • Participates in mandatory trainings.
  • Others duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Associate’s Degree or two (2) years of college. In lieu of the educational requirement, the housing navigator must have a minimum of two years of experience working with homeless service programs or a provision of social services.
  • Experience working with housing subsidies such as rapid rehousing, target affordable housing and permanent supportive housing vouchers.
  • Knowledge of housing resources and the Continuum of Care for homeless persons in the District.
  • Exceptional teamwork orientation with good written/oral communication skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal/conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstration of cross-cultural competencies.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • An attitude compatible with the goals and purposes of the National Center for Children and Families.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers to handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required y this job require close vision working with a computer monitor. While performing the duties of this job, employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. While performing the responsibilities of the employee’s job, these work environment characteristics are representative of the environment the employee will encounter. Salary: $52,000 - $58,000 Annually
