POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs applied techniques for various chemical, microscopic, immunologic and/or microbiological tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Works with a focus in specialty areas of the Laboratory, such as Blood Bank, Hematology, Chemistry, Serology and/or Microbiology. Receives and/or obtains specimens for laboratory analysis. Uses considerable judgment in making decisions requiring the interpretation and application of guidelines with considerable latitude to specific work situations. Records laboratory test results. Performs training activities and special projects. Takes responsibility for ordering and assigning testing for CAP surveys.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

A Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology
American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) certification as a Medical Technologist or ASCP Categorical Certification specific for laboratory section employed in (H, C, M, BB) or eligible required.
Must provide education transcript prior to start of employment.

EXPERIENCE:

At least one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience is preferred.
Phlebotomy experience is preferred.

COMPETENCIES:

Must be knowledgeable in laboratory automation and information systems.
Must have access to reliable transportation to travel between multiple work sites; and travel is required in order to perform essential duties.

Demonstrates efficient operation and knowledge of basic instrument theory of operation and function of components.
Troubleshoots instruments when necessary, in accordance with instrument specific manuals. Takes responsibility for maintenance and troubleshooting functions and performs full assessment of problems as they arise.
Adheres to turn-around-time standards for the Laboratory.
Assumes responsibility for instrument or pipette calibration functions.
Assists in coordinating proficiency testing results.
Performs section back-up procedures in accordance with the specific instrument.
Follows department policy and procedures for Quality Control and takes action as necessary when outliers exist. Assists with monitoring of Quality Control over time.
Exhibits technical expertise by assessing results and determining if they are accurate with no technical data amends that would affect patient care. Uses critical thinking skills when assessing patient results and makes good sound judgment before releasing results.
Makes calls promptly and documents calls to ensure test results are communicated to the appropriate health care provider.
Takes inventory and orders supplies as needed.
Performs temperature and eyewash checks and reviews records as needed.
Processes specimens efficiently to generate test results within the established TAT.
Assists in coordination of training employees in their section of expertise.
Collects all specimens by various phlebotomy methods for all age groups within the institution in an efficient and appropriate manner. Follows designated collection procedure and specimen requirements.
Assists and supports goal of working towards full compliance with accreditation standards.
Assists with coordinating of Quality Assurance activities.
Takes responsibility for ordering and assigning testing for CAP surveys.
