Job Description

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Psychiatry is seeking a Research Specialist to serve as a member of the UI Addiction and Recovery Collaborative (UI ARC) team. This position will provide specialized technical expertise through the management of day-to-day activities involved in the evaluation of grant-funded projects. As a Research Specialist, you will oversee the development and implementation of comprehensive evaluation plans; ensuring program operations, activities, and services align with and are consistent with goals and objectives of projects. This includes identifying and selecting appropriate measurements for evaluation; performing data analyses, data monitoring, and data interpretation; and designing and authoring reports. As a Research Specialist, you will also identify prospective funding opportunities; assist with design, preparation, assembling, and submission of grant proposals; and comply with reporting as required for existing grant-funded projects.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Work as part of an interdisciplinary team to plan, conduct, and oversee the evaluation of grant funded programs using both quantitative and qualitative methods.
Seek, synthesize, and organize information to summarize and communicate in a clear and concise manner.
Oversee and monitor multiple evaluation projects concurrently.
Understand the context of a program and how it affects planning, implementation, outcomes, and evaluation.
Ensure evaluation activities are done in a culturally competent manner.
Oversee the administrative functions, including the design and development of projects implementation, development of data collection measures and instruments, and program evaluation tools.
Develop and articulate program goals and objectives in a structure supporting evaluation.
Advise Principal Investigators and project teams in project implementation and troubleshooting implementation barriers.
Develop and test data collection tools to support evaluation projects and activities.
Oversee data collection, data entry, and data audit. Monitor data at regular intervals.
Generate queries, reports, exports, and other data as needed. Provide quantitative, graphical, and qualitative analysis. Assist in the preparation of materials as requested for reporting to funding sources.
Provide statistical support and interpret findings.
Assist with identifying evidence-based practices and advise on implementation of appropriate programs.
Review manuscripts and presentations and provide detailed feedback.
Monitor compliance to regulatory guidelines and proper maintenance of documents. Ensure timely and accurate report submission.
Study Requests for Proposals (RFPs). As skills develop, begin identifying opportunities for new RFPs through various sources of information. Coordinate the preparation of RFPs.
Meet RFP submission deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review, and approvals.
As skills develop, write structured, clear, articulate, and persuasive proposal drafts. Gather, assemble, and format information including project nature, objectives/outcomes/deliverables, implementation, methods, timelines, staffing, budgets, drafting and obtaining letters of support/commitment, and standards of performance and evaluation.
Manage databases, including Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap). Maintain and audit databases for projects, including identification and correction of discrepancies and compiling datasets for analyses.
Gather and provide detailed information needed for grant/IRB applications.
Ensure the protection of confidential data including and not limited to the privacy of the health care information.
Work in a team environment and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, learners, and various project stakeholders. Serve as liaison to grantor project staff, including individuals in public and private agencies such as Iowa Health and Human Services, federal agencies, treatment agencies, and others.
Collaborate through effective communication by providing regular updates and information to colleagues allowing the entire team to perform well.

Education Required
Master's degree in public health, social science, data science, or related field. In the absence of a master's degree, at least five years' work experience related to research support and program evaluation activities.

Required Qualifications
Knowledge of frameworks and methods for program evaluation in a research setting, including design, data collection, data analyses, and reporting.
A minimum of 3 years' experience working with a broad range of stakeholders that demonstrates an ability to encourage meaningful participation in a team setting.
Experience with project development and project management that includes evaluation plans and/or designs.
Experience with data collection, data management, databases, data analyses (e.g., frequency tables, correlations, group comparisons), and report writing.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated experience working effectively with colleagues in a diverse environment.
Evidence of ability to function with a high degree of independence while actively collaborating in a team environment.
Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and work in deadline-driven environment.
Technical writing experience.

Desirable Qualifications
Proficiency with statistical analysis programs (e.g., SAS, STATA, R).
Experience with behavioral health systems, medical education, or healthcare systems.
Familiarity with requirements for the implementation, evaluation, and grant management with at least one federal funding agency (SAMHSA, NIH, HRSA).
Knowledge of evidence-based practices related to substance use disorder and behavioral health.
Knowledge of and experience with designing, building, and implementing REDCap projects and Qualtrics surveys.
Experience with clinical trials research.
Experience with human subject's research and the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
Experience with writing and preparation of grant proposals and grant submission mechanisms (e.g., Cayuse, eRA Commons).
Experience with empirical manuscript preparation, review, and submission processes.
Familiarity with research conference submissions processes.
Experience with University of Iowa policies and procedures for research and external funding.
